The western North Carolina area surrounding the cities of Asheville, Hendersonville, and Brevard has some fantastic bike riding areas. Two very popular local spots for mountain biking are Pisgah National Forest and DuPont State Forest.

6th Annual SWANK 65 Mountain Bike Journey

The 6th Annual "SWANK 65" in 2004


Location:
From the junction of 64 and 276 in downtown Brevard, stay on 64 towards Rosman for about 5 miles. Take a right at the brown Kuykendall Campground sign. Race signs will lead you to the Start / Finish and parking.

Parking:
Parking is limited due to rules governing parking in Pisgahs Group Campgrounds. Please carpool if possible.

Course Description:
The Swank 65 Mountain Bike Journey is mountain bike racing at its most primeval, far removed from civilization and polluted air. The race begins at 2500 feet, and consists of a triad of cloverleafed shaped loops winding around Gloucester Gap in Pisgah Natyional Forest. Rolling over rugged mining roads, fun single track, tough climbs and hell-raising descents, the exhilarating course will test your skills and desire as you explore the devilish terrain of the Pisgah National Forest. 42 miles (65K) in length.

Start Time:
A controlled mass start will begin promptly at 10:00am. Race meeting at start line at 9:45am. Every racer must attend meeting.

Rest Stops/First Aid:
There will be four fully stocked rest stops on the course. The reast stops have food, Gatorade, and H20. We have a drop system organized so you can arrange to have your personal supplies at the rest stops. First aid will be at every rest area and the Start/Finish area. Restroom facilities are also at the Start/Finish.

Camping:
Free camping will be available in the peaceful cove around the Start/Finish area of Kuykendall group campground Saturday and Sunday nights.

Weather:
Weather mid November in the forest is generally 40-50 degrees around race time and can either warm up to the 60s or drop in the low 40s. Riders saw snowflakes in 2002. Be prepared for all conditions!

Ride Fee:
$70 Includes fully-stocked rest stops, keg finish, as well as vitamin packed smoothies from Juice Plus for easy recovery.

Entry fee includes an exciting race course, four completely stocked rest stops, awards party and Highlands Ale finish.
